iyengar

B.K.S. Iyengar (Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar) was an influential yoga teacher who popularized the practice worldwide. Born in 1918 in India, he overcame health issues through yoga and went on to develop the Iyengar Yoga method, emphasizing precision, alignment, and the use of props to support practitioners of all levels.

Iyengar’s approach to props in yoga is renowned for its innovation and accessibility. He believed that props such as blocks, straps, chair and bolsters could assist students in achieving proper alignment and understanding of yoga poses, regardless of their flexibility or experience. Through meticulous attention to detail and the use of props, Iyengar aimed to make yoga accessible to everyone, promoting physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.
